A Fifty Year Barbering Tradition

In June 1957 Middleburg Heights became home to a newly founded barbershop located in a brand new building on Southland Drive. At that time, hundreds of similar barbershops throughout Northeast Ohio provided men and boys with not only neatly trimmed hair, but also a place for lively conversation, political debate, and a chance to discuss events of the day. As time passed, these local meeting spots have practically disappeared from the landscape, giving way to hair salons and national hair cutting chains. Frank's Barbershop, although, remains a testament to the barbering tradition of yesteryear, and has continued to thrive by remaining true to its roots.

Dave Buran, current owner of Frank's Barbershop and a second generation barber, began cutting hair in 1963. In 1988 he purchased the shop from childhood friend Frank Rogal, and retained the shop's name in honor their longstanding friendship. We visited with Dave recently, and listened as he offered this description of the services he provides;

Frank's Barbershop is an old-fashioned barbershop offering haircuts for men and boys. We are excellent barbers, and between the three of us here we have about one hundred years of experience cutting hair. We still do all the hair tonics and aftershaves, and still use a straight razor to trim around the back of the neck and around the ears. We don't do any hair coloring or fancy barbering, but if you are looking for an old-fashioned barber shop with a nice, comfortable atmosphere, this is it.

Our specialty is providing you with a good haircut by expert barbers. We do everything from the full buzz haircut all the way up to the latest fades, tapers, and our regular scissor and comb haircut, in addition to full face shaves. When a customer requests a shave, we first place a hot towel on their face to soften the beard and skin. Then we rub the heated lather in and place another hot towel on their face while we make sure the razor is sharp and ready to go. Once the towel is removed, we re-lather and begin to shave. When we are finished, we apply aftershave, powder, or cream, whichever the customer prefers. Of course, the face shave is something that people either want to experience or they don't, but for those who do, it's an experience with no equal.

Our business is strictly walk-in and we don't take appointments. We have two barbers on duty during the week and three on Fridays and Saturdays. Sometimes we feel we're getting old because we've been here so long, but it makes us feel good when we realize that we often serve three generations of the same family.

Treat yourself to the experience of expert haircutting in the barbering tradition of yesteryear. Stop by Frank's Barbershop today, and don't forget to tell them The Advocate sent you!
